Most referrals to other specialists will require you seeing or speaking with a GP. However, there are a number of local services, listed below, that you are able to make self referrals to.

It is common for people experiencing emotional distress to have thoughts of harming themselves. If you are concerned about being able to keep yourself safe and in need of immediate support, please contact the emergency services by telephoning 111 or 999 or attend your local A&E.

Psychological talking therapies

VitaMinds is part of the Department of Health's Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) initiative. They offer access to a range of different talking therapies, psychoeducational group courses and offer access to sessions with Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners , Counsellors and Cognitive Behavioural Therapists.

If you have had a bereavement in the last 5 years, or have been diagnosed with cancer or are a relative of someone living with cancer and need counselling, you can self-refer by telephoning Dove Community Counselling service on 01277 655 039

Find a psychological therapies service in England

You can refer yourself directly to a psychological therapies service (IAPT) without seeing your GP.These services offer therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), for common problems including: stress, anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and phobias. 

NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS DPP) identifies those at diabetes high risk and refers them onto a behaviour change programme.
